The second-oldest public school in Collingswood is set to close because of budget cuts. <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And a scrap-metal facility that keeps catching on fire in Camden is suing the city. <\/p>\n

Tight school budgets, hard decisions<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

James Garfield Elementary School in Collingswood<\/b> will close its doors at the end of the school year after more than a century in the borough. Students and staff will be transferred to other schools. <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been the best 13 years of my career,\u201d principal Mark Wiltsey said. \u201cIs it sad? Of course. I was all about it. It\u2019s who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Superintendent Fred McDowell made the call to close the K-5 school after grappling with a $3.3 million budget deficit for the school year. The lack of funds led to programs and staff cuts, too.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

School districts across the state are stressed under tight budgets. Haddonfield<\/b>, Washington Township<\/b>, and Cherry Hill<\/b> are also reducing staff positions. <\/p>\n

EMR is suing to reopen in Camden<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

The city of Camden halted the operations of EMR Metal Recycling earlier this month after its 13th fire since 2020. Now, the scrapyard is suing.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Their argument is that the city overstepped and didn\u2019t provide due process. The company is also claiming that the facility is out $10 million in revenue and operational costs.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time the company has been in a legal fight over the fires. The New Jersey attorney general\u2019s office and local residents have sued the facility in the past. <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Last Thursday, Camden City Council voted on a resolution calling on local and national agencies that have jurisdiction over the facility to shut it down. <\/p>\n

    Camden County released information on ongoing roadwork projects throughout the week. Drivers in Camden<\/b>, Cherry Hill<\/b>, Haddon Heights<\/b>, and Winslow Township<\/b> in particular should be aware and plan to take alternative routes when necessary. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n
