In 2017 he was named a MacArthur Fellow, the award commonly known as the \u201cGenius Grant.\u201d He won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 2024 for his <i>Adagio (for Wadada Leo Smith)<\/i>, and his albums as a drummer, composer, and bandleader are routinely hailed as among the most innovative and exploratory in modern jazz.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Referring to one aspect of Sorey\u2019s work as <i>jazz<\/i>, opposed to a <i>classical<\/i> strain, is where things get complicated. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>He has been commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra, spent three years as composer in residence with Opera Philadelphia, and composed the much-acclaimed <i>Monochromatic Light (Afterlife)<\/i>, inspired by Houston\u2019s Rothko Chapel and the music of Morton Feldman. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>But, Sorey remains unburdened by stylistic boundaries, and his expansive vision bleeds over from one tradition to another and inevitably transforms all.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re at a time now where we\u2019re doing away with such a dichotomy [between classical and jazz],\u201d Sorey said while reclining on a couch at the Kimmel Center following a rehearsal of <i>For Marilyn Crispell<\/i>. \u201cI\u2019m looking for an artistic cross-pollination of those ideals. Ultimately my goal is to create an ensemble music, not one that necessarily carries interpretational baggage but one that\u2019s about purely engaging on a level where you\u2019re interacting as a musician with other musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Dedicated to the Philadelphia-born pianist Crispell, who was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2025, Sorey\u2019s piece for piano and orchestra lives up to N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin\u2019s exultant praise. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The 30-minute work is as exquisite as it is demanding, unfolding with painstaking slowness and ethereally soft hues, insisting that the orchestra and guest pianist Aaron Diehl breathe together as one instrument, almost as one organism.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The breadth of Sorey\u2019s artistry is evidenced by contrasting the mesmerizing stillness of <i>For Marilyn Crispell <\/i>with the last time the composer was featured on a Philly stage. In February, Sorey and his sextet performed at the Annenberg Center, previewing his forthcoming album <i>Members \u2026 Don\u2019t!<\/i> (which will be released by Pi Recordings on Friday). <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The concert featured Sorey\u2019s reimagining of the music from Max Roach\u2019s fervent 1968 album <i>Members, Don\u2019t Git Weary. <\/i>It was a compelling investigation, refraction, and explosion of the politically charged source material.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=134\">Stephen Colbert\u2019s departure recalls the path blazed by another of CBS\u2019s presidential provocateurs, Norman Lear<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The two boldly distinct works raised the idea of interpretation \u2014 one requiring a pianist and orchestra to unite in interpreting Sorey\u2019s unconventional compositional ideas; the other, a daring reinterpretation of a landmark album in jazz history. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe quality of interpretation matters more than anything else,\u201d Sorey explained. \u201cWhatever musical situation I\u2019m put in front of \u2014 blues songs, gospel, so-called jazz, or hip-hop \u2014 I try to be as authentically myself as possible in every situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>For Diehl, engaging with Sorey\u2019s musical language has been vitally transformative. The pianist joined Sorey\u2019s trio in 2021, since then releasing four albums with either Matt Brewer or Harish Raghavan on bass, one of them supplemented by the alto saxophonist Greg Osby. All atypically showcase the drummer\u2019s take on standard repertoire and pop songs, but in Sorey\u2019s hands these familiar tunes inevitably become fodder for lengthy contemplation and deep inquiry. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cPlaying with Tyshawn has changed my perception of performing and the necessity and impact of patience,\u201d Diehl said.\u201cA piece like <i>For Marilyn Crispell <\/i>becomes about how you perceive time, both in its more metaphysical aspects, but also the literal perception of time in the music. It can be incredibly challenging and taxing, much more so than if I were playing something that was hyper flashy and virtuosic.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe live a life where everyone is in a hurry for something else to happen,\u201d Sorey said. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s good to sit in a moment for a longer period of time so that you can get more depth out of that experience. I think we need more opportunities to bask in everything that\u2019s going on and look at it in granular detail.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><i>For Marilyn Crispell<\/i> demanded that Diehl demonstrate an otherworldly patience and an achingly delicate touch; at the Annenberg, Sorey was having none of that. As Lex Korten segued between two songs with a few minutes of gossamer solo piano, Sorey suddenly hurled his drumstick onto the floor, a theatrical moment of musical punctuation as well as a cue to move things along.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Urgency is central to Sorey\u2019s passion for <i>Members, Don\u2019t Git Weary<\/i>. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>He recalls his visceral reaction to hearing Roach\u2019s bracing drum solo on Gary Bartz\u2019s \u201cLibra\u201d as a teenager, describing it as sounding like, \u201cMax is literally yelling at you, \u2018Get your sh\u2014 together, America!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>With <i>Members \u2026 Don\u2019t! <\/i>Sorey seizes the opportunity to shout at the America of his own time. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI relate to <i>Members, Don\u2018t Git Weary<\/i> on so many levels historically, not only as an American but as a Black American,\u201d he said. \u201cAll the tumult that was happening in 1968 is still very relevant now.
