Democrats become first members of Congress to access Pennsylvania\u2019s largest ICE detention facility<\/a><\/p><div><\/div><p>But it wasn\u2019t in a way where Sugarman, the club\u2019s principal owner since its inception, hinted at plans of selling the club like fans have chanted for much of this season. The team has a 1-10-4 record heading into the FIFA World Cup break.<\/p><div><\/div><div><div><div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div><\/div><p>In fact, when asked directly if that was his intention, he expertly deflected before later saying that the club\u2019s newly announced sporting director, Jon Scheer, has a hypothetical $10 million more to chase redemption during July\u2019s summer transfer window. <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>\u201cJon and I have talked about if we spend $10 million and $8 [million] of it is transfer [fees] and $2 [million] of its salary, or $2 [million] of its transfer, [and] $8 million of it is salary, it\u2019s still $10 million,\u201d Sugarman said.<\/p><div><\/div><p>It was Sugarman\u2019s first appearance since announcing several staffing changes on Wednesday, most notably the firing of manager Bradley Carnell and removing Scheer\u2019s interim tag as sporting director, which confirmed the exit of former sporting director Ernst Tanner, who was serving a league suspension for \u201csubstantiated\u201d claims of misconduct and abuse. Tanner will not return following league-mandated sensitivity training, which was set to conclude on June 1.<\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>Sugarman or Scheer did not elaborate whether the $10 million Sugarman suggested was a real sum or, in fact, hypothetical, noting only that there are \u201cresources\u201d at Scheer\u2019s discretion. <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>\u201cWhat resources does [Scheer] need to make this team what we want it to be?\u201d continued Sugarman. \u201cHow it\u2019s spent is really the technical staff\u2019s decision. I don\u2019t pay a ton of attention to where it goes if it\u2019s salary vs. transfer fees. Look, we know what it takes to succeed. We\u2019ve been a successful club for the past six years. This is something we know how to do \u2026 this year we just really struggled to execute.\u201d<\/p><div><\/div><p>Scheer, who had previously served as the club\u2019s director of academy and professional development, has a busy seven weeks ahead. He\u2019s been tasked with looking at a pool of talent and evaluating what\u2019s already in the locker room. His top priority, though, will be conducting what the club called a \u201cglobal search\u201d for its next manager. <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>Sugarman even noted publicly that major change is not what he\u2019s looking for out of the team\u2019s next manager, who would become just the fifth in club history.<\/p><div><\/div><p>\u201cI think a coach who comes in with a wildly different philosophy is probably a stretch here,\u201d said Sugarman. \u201cWe want to continue to do what we\u2019re doing. We just want to get better at it. And they may have strengths or weaknesses in any particular pillar, but \u2026 if they come in with a wildly different viewpoint, I\u2019m not sure that\u2019s really productive.\u201d<\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>This next person would also make the third coach Sugarman has to foot the bill for, as the club is still paying former manager Jim Curtin\u2019s buyout, and is still contractually obligated to Carnell at least through the end of the season. <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=166\">Phillies\u2019 Orion Kerkering trying to \u2018build off of a bad memory\u2019 as he returns to Dodger Stadium<\/a><\/p><div><\/div><div><div><blockquote><p>New beginnings. pic.twitter.com\/BCIZJPfd3W<\/p>\u2014 Philadelphia Union (@PhilaUnion) May 28, 2026<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div><div><\/div><p>But it was a rare time when it didn\u2019t seem like Sugarman cared about price tags. On Thursday, he admitted two truths. The first was that the timing of the Union\u2019s misfortune, when all of the eyes are on American soccer ahead of the World Cup, isn\u2019t exactly fortuitous, and that the last four months have been \u201cpainful\u201d to watch. <\/p><div><\/div><p>\u201cLook, losing is terrible, it\u2019s really devastating,\u201d Sugarman said. \u201cSo, we go back to basics, we go back to what we\u2019re doing right. What are we not doing right? How do we get better? I don\u2019t approach this as telling our technical staff what to do. I ask questions about why, [but] I\u2019ve never once told them to sell a player. But I do ask questions like, \u2018Why are we doing this?\u2019 And I feel really angry at myself that, walking in for this year, we didn\u2019t ask harder questions.\u201d <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>Sugarman paused and added: \u201cThis was an important year. This is a year we really wanted to stand out. So this is really painful to be in this position in a year where the eyes of the world will be on us, and we had a chance to really tell the Philadelphia Union story in a way that I don\u2019t think it\u2019s been told. We will be back there again. I have no doubt.\u201d<\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><h3>Scheer is going for goals<\/h3><\/div><div><\/div><p>In assessing what the Union needs during the transfer window, Scheer didn\u2019t hesitate: goals. At the break, the Union have scored just 18 goals across 15 league matches, while allowing 30. In the offseason, the Union signed Ezekiel Alladoh for a club-record transfer fee of $4.5 million. <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>However, since his arrival, the 20-year-old has struggled, going from a player in which much was expected to one that Carnell referred to as a \u201cproject,\u201d the club was still developing. <\/p><div><\/div><p>Milan Iloski, who has been used as a hybrid forward-midfielder, leads the team with seven goals. <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>But he needs help, and according to Scheer, it\u2019s coming. <\/p><div><\/div><p>\u201cLook, it\u2019s very clear that we need pieces,\u201d Scheer said. \u201cWe\u2019ve identified key ingredients that we\u2019re looking for in our additions [and] in our signings.
