And on top of all of that, it\u2019s a Jersey Shore movie. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=1711\">See what $405,000 can buy you in the Fairmount, Drexel Hill, and Camden County housing markets | The Price Point<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Released in 1996, it stars Tony Shalhoub and Stanley Tucci as Primo and Secondo, a pair of Italian immigrant brothers who operate an authentic but failing Italian restaurant in an unnamed Jersey Shore town in the 1950s. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Chafing under the competition of the more successful but less authentic restaurant across the street, the brothers stake it all on the eponymous \u201cBig Night\u201d when they\u2019ve been told the jazz bandleader Louis Prima is coming to dine at their spot. Presumably, he\u2019d then talk up the food and save their restaurant. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><i>Big Night <\/i>is full of mouth-watering food, starting with the timpano, a complex dish that includes a crust, meat, pasta, and more. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>While the film\u2019s exteriors were shot in Red Bank and Keyport, the film never specifies exactly where it is set. The interiors were shot on a soundstage in New York City. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was really one of those towns that had not changed too much,\u201d Shalhoub said to The Inquirer. \u201cThe town, the outside of the restaurant, the beach sequences, were all shot in Jersey.\u201d And even in 1996, they easily stood in for the 1950s\u2019 Jersey Shore.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Shalhoub, well-known for the TV series <i>Monk <\/i>and <i>The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,<\/i> among numerous movie roles, shot<i> Big Night<\/i> during a summer hiatus from his sitcom, <i>Wings. <\/i><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI knew Stanley Tucci; we had done a play together in the late \u201880s,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were both actors in New York, I had seen his work in the theater, [and] we had similar friends and directors in common.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>There was a specific reason Tucci decided to make <i>Big Night<\/i>, Shalhoub said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201c[He wanted] to sort of begin to establish himself as an actor \u2026 not to be pigeonholed into the stereotypical Italian Mafia zone.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>There was no mention of that in <i>Big Night.<\/i> <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about the brothers,\u201d Shalhoub said, \u201cIt\u2019s about the period, it\u2019s about the food, it\u2019s about the old country, Primo having one foot still in the old country.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe closest we get to violence is those two clowns rolling around. They don\u2019t even know how to fight,\u201d the actor mentioned during a conversation following a special screening of the film at the Lighthouse International Film Festival on Long Beach Island, recently.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><i>Big Night<\/i> had been \u201cin the pipeline\u201d for many years, and Shalhoub had originally auditioned for the role of Pascal, the rival restaurant owner ultimately played in the film by Ian Holm. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>It finally came together in the summer of 1995; the shoot lasted about four weeks. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI was thrilled,\u201d Shalhoub said. \u201cAny part, either part, I was happy to join, because I loved the material, and I had a lot of respect for Stanley.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Tucci and Campbell Scott, actors who had been high school classmates, co-directed the film, which was co-written by Tucci and his cousin, Joseph Tropiano.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=1709\">\ud83e\udd5c Still nutty after 50 years | Morning Newsletter<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how he wore all those hats,\u201d Shalhoub said of Tucci. \u201cBeing a cowriter \u2026 and co-directing, and being in almost every scene, and it being his first film.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Shalhoub, who is from a large Lebanese American family in Green Bay, Wisc., had limited exposure to Italian American food and culture while growing up. He also didn\u2019t live anywhere near an ocean. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The <i>Big Night <\/i>shoot was his first time at the Jersey Shore. He had, however, had some experience with Italian food.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Growing up, he remembers being taken to a family friend\u2019s apartment, where an \u201colder Italian woman\u201d made \u201csome pasta dishes.\u201d  <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what I was eating, but I couldn\u2019t get enough of it.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>At 19, after heading East for college at the University of Southern Maine, Shalhoub had his first \u201cItalian sandwich, which I\u2019d never heard of before \u2026 And all the variations on an Italian sub, and all those great Italian deli meats.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>On the sets of <i>Big Night<\/i>, he said, the crew had food stylists preparing the dinners shown in the film.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAll these meals that we had to consume on camera \u2026 it was delicious!\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The film ends with a famous scene \u2014 five minutes of no dialogue, just Tucci cooking an omelet and the brothers sitting down to eat it. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The film\u2019s financiers didn\u2019t understand that scene and wanted it changed or removed, Scott said at the film screening. The directors then pulled the old Mel Brooks trick; they said they\u2019d take the scene out, but didn\u2019t. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Tucci and Shalhoub, 30 years later, are not only very busy actors, but both have recently hosted food-focused travel shows: Hulu\u2019s <i>Tucci in Italy<\/i> and HBO\u2019s <i>Breaking Bread<\/i>, respectively. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI could never have imagined that this movie would have the legs that it has, that 30 years in, it would still be a film that people go back to, and consider one of the best food movies,\u201d Shalhoub said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Philadelphia chef and restaurateur Marc Vetri is a fan.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn 1996, chefs were in this kind of zone,\u201d said Vetri, who watched the film shortly after it came out. \u201cWe all made the menus, and we had our visions, and we didn\u2019t want to alter anything, and [said] \u2018this is how we do it\u2019.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>He still remembers the unveiling of the timpano in the film. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor me, that was magic,\u201d he said. \u201cI was like, \u2018I gotta make that\u2019 \u2026 I get that because when I finish something that I\u2019m working on, I have that same look, that same feeling; it looks like I\u2019m in love. That never leaves us.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Vetri, who has gone on to cook for many famous people, said the film always reminds him of when, early in the life of his first restaurant, he cooked for the famed French chef Jacques P\u00e9pin. He cooked his whole roasted fish, with cherry tomatoes and olives. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Thirty years on, Vetri \u2014 like many others \u2014 remains a fan.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe music, the vibes, and even the ending \u2026 Everything [with] cooking, you always just want to make it the most awesome thing.
