In seven appearances since being activated from the injured list, Backhus has a 7.94 ERA. <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>\u201cWe just felt like Back hasn\u2019t been throwing the ball like he did before before the injury,\u201d said interim manager Don Mattingly. \u201cHe says he feels great, and I think he understands he\u2019s just not throwing the ball well yet, so this gives him an opportunity to kind of work regularly, get his stuff together, and be prepared when we need him.\u201d<\/p><div><\/div><p>Backhus also pitched an inning in the 15-1 loss to the Royals in the series finale on Monday, while Lazar gives the Phillies a fresh arm. Lazar, who has a 3.93 ERA in 18\u2153 innings in triple A, can also be a multi-inning option. <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>Right-hander Brad Keller joined the team in Cincinnati and is set to be reinstated from the injured list on Wednesday. Keller had been on the shelf since June 16 with right forearm tendinitis, a nagging injury that Mattingly said he had been pitching through for a while before hitting the injured list. <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>Keller made two appearances with the IronPigs on a rehab assignment, and pitched a scoreless inning on Sunday. Mattingly wanted to give Keller two days off before activating him. <\/p><div><\/div><p>Even after the blowout loss in Kansas City on Monday after Cristopher S\u00e1nchez only went 3\u2154 innings, Mattingly feels his bullpen is in good shape for the Phillies\u2019 series against the Reds. Garrett Stubbs pitched an inning in the loss, which also helped save an arm. <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>Wednesday\u2019s game in Cincinnati will be a bullpen game, although the Phillies have not yet announced who will take the ball to start. <\/p><div><\/div><div><h3>Day off for Marsh<\/h3><\/div><div><\/div><p>With Brandon Marsh due for a day off, and the Phillies facing two left-handers in a row \u2014 the Royals\u2019 Noah Cameron on Monday and the Reds\u2019 Andrew Abbott on Tuesday \u2014 Mattingly let the outfielder choose when to sit. <\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2196\">Gov. Derek Hill started in right. <\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>\u201c[Abbott\u2019s] got more of the sweep, which is a pitch that\u2019s given Marshy more trouble from the left side,\u201d Mattingly said. <\/p><div><\/div><p>Marsh has a .256 batting average and .706 OPS against left-handers this season after playing his way into an everyday role. <\/p><div><\/div><p>As the All-Star break approaches, Mattingly thinks the team overall is keeping its focus. <\/p><div><\/div><p>\u201cI\u2019ve had a lot of teams that you go into the break and you know guys are kind of hitting the wall a little bit. They also know these days off are coming,\u201d Mattingly said. \u201cI always talk about playing to the break. \u2026 Don\u2019t take it off a series early or something. But I think we\u2019re holding up OK. I think the tone with which we\u2019ve played, not so much the result of the game, but the way you feel, the way guys are going about their business and stuff, you still feel good about.\u201d<\/p><div><\/div><div><h3>Extra bases<\/h3><\/div><div><\/div><p>Reds All-Star right-hander Chase Burns (10-1, 2.40 ERA) will start against the Phillies in their bullpen game on Wednesday. <\/p><div><\/div><div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" alt=\"The Inquirer logo\" class=\"wp-image-47\" src=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/faba80d67140212ba32240655442c529.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n        Watch the latest episode\n      <\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Dan Baker<\/strong> has been the Phillies&#8217; public-address announcer for 54 seasons, the longest active run and third-longest all-time.
