It\u2019s also going to stick around.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In its Thursday update, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration advised that El Ni\u00f1o would<b> &#8220;<\/b>strengthen through the end of the year, with a 97% chance it will last through early spring 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sea-surface temperatures over a 2.4-million-square-mile critical portion of the tropical Pacific are running about 2 degrees Fahrenheit above long-term averages, more than qualifying for El Ni\u00f1o status. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In records dating to 1950, those temperatures have reached as high as 4.5 degrees above normal. In this El Ni\u00f1o event, the temperatureshave a \u201c43% chance\u201d of reaching that level, said Michelle L\u2019Heureux,physical scientist at NOAA\u2019s Climate Prediction Center. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>As for what impacts it will have, NOAA scientists point out that El Nino won\u2019t be acting in isolation and that it would be impossible to know. However, based on past strong El Ni\u00f1os, expect unusual levels of strangeness for the next several months.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>For Philly, it may have significance for the stubborn drought conditions, but that also could come with a positive development.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>And its potentially benign effects on the Atlantic hurricane season may save some lives and yield a robust bonus for the U.S. treasury.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>El Ni\u00f1o, and how it affects the U.S. weather<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1os develop as part of a periodic natural process as east-to-west trade winds that push water into the western Pacific slacken, allowing prodigious massive amounts of warm water to move eastward.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The warmer water interacts with the overlying air, setting off convective thunderstorms and altering west-to-east upper-air winds that deliver the weather to the United States and other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Reliable responses to El Ni\u00f1o include storminess in the the southern United States and warmth in much of the northern states and Canada. For Philly, about the only constant has been strangeness. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>El Ni\u00f1o has competition in the air and on the ground<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o is an crucial piece of the atmospheric puzzle in long-range forecasting. However, it also interacts with other phenomena, such as the Arctic Oscillation \u2014 shifts in atmospheric pressure between the Arctic and the lower latitudes, and an important driver of winter temperatures \u2014 and patterns in the North Atlantic, which \u201cmay reinforce or counteract each other,\u201d said Johnna Infanti, a climate center meteorologist.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>And when it comes to developing outlooks for the seasons, forecasters have to consider earthly phenomenon such as the changes in soil moisture to sea ice, he said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to remember that an El Ni\u00f1o can shift the odds toward certain outcomes,\u201d he said, \u201cbut the outcome is not guaranteed.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>That said, \u201cstronger events can tilt the odds more heavily in favor of the expected outcome,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2340\">The MLB draft in Philly has a few firsts, including the Phillies being penalized<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>Was El Ni\u00f1o behind the July 4th weekend extreme heat?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The short answer in all probability would be <i>no<\/i>, said Infanti. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In summer, he said, \u201cThere is no clear link between above-average temperatures over the United States and El Ni\u00f1o,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Besides, this El Ni\u00f1o is still a relative toddler. This one is expected to last for about a year, a typical lifespan, saidL\u2019Heureux.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>While the sea-surface temperature has surpassed the El Ni\u00f1o threshold, \u201cthe atmosphere is still aligning,\u201d said Matthew Rosencrans, NOAA\u2019s lead hurricane seasonal forecaster.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>As it intensifies and the atmospheric response strengthens, the impacts will become more evident, and they are likely to be significant during the peak of the hurricane season, from mid-August into September, he said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>That may be welcome news for residents and property owners along the Atlantic Coast and for U.S. taxpayers.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>El Ni\u00f1o is likely to result in few Atlantic Hurricanes<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o can generated powerful upper-air shearing winds that can suppress hurricane development in the Atlantic Basin.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In six years in which sea-surfacetemperatures in the key El Ni\u00f1o zone remained 3.5 degrees or higher above normal for three months or more, the Atlantic tropical-storm season was far less active than normal.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The numbers for all named storms, those with winds of 39 mph or higher; hurricanes, which havewinds of at least 74 mph; and \u201cmajor\u201d hurricanes, those with winds of 111 or higher, were substantially below long-term averages. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><iframe aria-label=\"Column Chart\" data-external=\"1\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"578\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-bjH5P\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/bjH5P\/2\/\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" title=\"El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s Gentler Side\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Among all federal disaster relief fund disasters, hurricanes are far and away the most expensive. In a congressional study covering the 30-year period through 1992, hurricanes accounted for 44%, or more than $150 billion, of all federal disaster money.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>A potential downside would be that fewer storms would lessen the chances for any drought-relieving tropical-storm remnants. (On the plus side, the region wouldn\u2019t have to deal with their attendant flooding: See Ida, 2021.)<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>El Ni\u00f1o and the Philadelphia winter<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Looking way ahead, El Ni\u00f1o isn\u2019t much help in determining how the winter might play out. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>One characteristic of strong El Ni\u00f1os has been persistence of certain patterns. What happens tends to keep happening, since ocean temperatures change ponderously.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The six strongest El Ni\u00f1os persisted into winter and left quite a disparate legacy in Philly.
