Michigan alone had reported more than 3,000 cases by Tuesday. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a much higher number than we typically see in a cyclosporiasis season \u2014 much, much higher than last year or the year before,\u201d said Gwen Biggerstaff, the deputy director Director of CDC\u2019s Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Reporting requirements for cyclosporiasis cases differ in Pennsylvania, but cases here remain relatively low. Cases were also at typical levels in New Jersey, and none have been reported in Delaware since May.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know about the parasite and how to prevent it:<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>How is cyclosporiasis spread?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Cyclosporiasis is caused by a single-celled parasite, <i>Cyclospora<\/i>, that spreads through fecal material. It can infect a person\u2019s gut after consuming food or water contaminated by feces. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, a loss of appetite, cramping, nausea, and fatigue. Past outbreaks have been associated with leafy greens and other produce, said Rosemary Trout, an associate professor of food science at Drexel University.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The disease doesn\u2019t spread directly from person to person. It becomes infectious after one to two weeks outside the body, and infected people may not immediately develop symptoms.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt can take two days to two weeks for symptoms to appear,\u201d said Akhil Vaidya, a distinguished professor in the Department of Microbiology &amp; Immunology at Drexel\u2019s College of Medicine. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThat has been the challenge for tracking where the parasite came from. Most likely it\u2019s in some produce, but which produce it\u2019s coming from is not really clear. People don\u2019t remember what they ate two weeks back.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>How do health officials track cyclosporiasis? <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Health officials in 47 states, including New Jersey and Delaware are required by law to report cyclosporiasis cases to the CDC. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Pennsylvania is among a handful of states where doctors are not required to report cases to health officials, but they do so on a voluntary basis, and state officials investigate and submit case reports to the CDC.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>A federal foodborne illness surveillance system, FoodNet, stopped tracking cyclosporiasis last year. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2563\">Philly schools will get $157 million more in this year\u2019s state budget. Gov. Josh Shapiro came to South Philly to tout the plan.<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>But that program\u2019s goal is to \u201clook at trends over time to inform policy and prevention activities,\u201d not monitor active outbreaks, and only drew data from 10 sites around the country, the CDC\u2019s Biggerstaff said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201c[FoodNet] doesn\u2019t give us the data we have from national surveillance,\u201d she said. That broader program is \u201cunchanged,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>Are there cases in the Philly area?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Though Pennsylvania borders Ohio and West Virginia, two states involved in an ongoing outbreak, cases here have been relatively low. So far this year, state health officials have reported 28 cases, 14 of them in Southeastern Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>New Jersey has reported between 31 and 80 cases since May, when cyclosporiasis cases typically rise, according to the CDC. But health officials there  that the state is experiencing \u201cnormal seasonal circulation without known clusters or outbreaks.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Delaware has not reported any cases since May 1, the CDC said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>What about cases elsewhere?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Cases in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia are considered part of a \u201cmultistate outbreak\u201d that is likely tied to a common source, Biggerstaff said. But it\u2019s still unclear what that source is.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Though the CDC has lagged behind states in confirming cases so far, the agency has confirmed 1,645 cyclosporiasis cases since May, and is monitoring another 5,100 additional reported cases that will \u201crequire additional analysis to confirm,\u201d Biggerstaff said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>How is cyclosporiasis prevented? <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Good handwashing practices are the first line of defense against cyclosporiasis: Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds in hot, soapy water. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Washing produce also helps, but rinsing does not necessarily remove all traces of cyclospora, said Trout, the food safety professor. Heating produce to 150 degrees Fahrenheit can kill the parasite. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Trout said that higher-risk groups \u2014 immunocompromised people, young children, elderly people, and pregnant women \u2014 may want to avoid fresh produce and instead opt for frozen or canned fruit and vegetables. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Most of those products have been treated with heat at some point in their packaging process. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf you are in a high risk population, or very worried about it, it\u2019s valid,\u201d she said. \u201cThe case number is very high, and it\u2019s proximate to our state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2561\">Cheltenham, Gloucester Township schools under investigation as federal officials target sexual abuse by teachers<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cases in Pennsylvania remain relatively low.
