Mikie Sherrill\u2019s efforts to establish protected protest zones outside the Newark immigration detention center, according to news reports.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=259\">As home costs rise, Pennsylvanians can now use a new loan for down payments and closing costs<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The tensions escalated after officials said police asked demonstrators to disperse so employees could leave, according to a statement from New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport just after midnight Saturday. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>But demonstrators said they were boxed in by law enforcement, and one person told NJ.com that they were given minutes to disperse, then authorities pushed protesters and shot off \u201ctear gas, pepper balls, and possibly rubber bullets.\u201d Several protesters said state troopers charged them on foot and on horseback, the New York Times reported. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Update from Attorney General Jennifer Davenport on Public Safety Efforts at Delaney Hall. pic.twitter.com\/FP0haQrESy<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Attorney General Jennifer Davenport (@NewJerseyOAG) May 30, 2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Davenport said New Jersey State Police only took action after a small group of demonstrators refused orders, deployed fireworks, and threw gas canisters. Their \u201cdangerous actions,\u201d Davenport said, \u201cput everyone in harm\u2019s way.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cTo ensure the safety of everyone involved, including the overwhelmingly peaceful protesters at the facility, State Police temporarily cleared the area outside Delaney Hall,\u201d the attorney general\u2019s statement said. \u201cWe remain committed to protecting everyone\u2019s safety and their constitutional right to protest peacefully.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In her own statement Saturday morning, Sherrill echoed Davenport, saying that state police\u2019s actions were \u201cabsolutely necessary to protect public safety, and avoid escalation from ICE.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cToday and going forward, I urge everyone who is protesting to do so peacefully in the safe areas, and work together to bring the temperature down,\u201d she said. \u201cWe need to focus on advocating for better conditions for the detainees, for their families, and ultimately, for the closure of Delaney Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>My top priority is keeping New Jerseyans and our communities safe \u2013 and an increased ICE surge in the area outside of Delaney Hall is a threat to public safety. And I will not accept that risk.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>A spokesperson for the governor\u2019s office did not immediately respond to an email seeking additional information and comment; an email seeking comment from New Jersey State Police was not immediately returned. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The protests outside have been ongoing for a week as detainees inside launched a hunger strike over poor, unsanitary living conditions. Federal authorities have denied all allegations of lack of care or improper treatment of detainees at the 1,000-bed facility.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill, U.S. Sen. Andy Kim, and other Democratic members of New Jersey\u2019s congressional delegation tried to conduct an oversight visit of the detention center earlier this week. While Sherrill said her request to visit the facility was formally denied, Kim was eventually allowed inside.
