{"id":2720,"date":"2026-07-17T13:07:36","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T13:07:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2720"},"modified":"2026-07-17T13:07:36","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T13:07:36","slug":"south-phillys-newest-cafe-has-a-home-run-breakfast-sandwich-and-lines-out-the-door","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2720","title":{"rendered":"South Philly\u2019s newest cafe has a home-run breakfast sandwich and lines out the door"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div><audio><\/audio><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>All Jeremy Asch and Abby Armstrong wanted was a good breakfast sandwich close to their Point Breeze home.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2718\">Tom Kean is back in Congress but still isn\u2019t talking<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAt some point, you say, \u2018Screw it, I\u2019ll do it myself,\u2019\u201d Asch said. \u201cIf <i>we<\/i> want it, I\u2019m sure somebody else wants it, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The result is Schmaltz, a new breakfast-and-lunch caf\u00e9 at 18th and Wharton Streets serving a deliberately tight menu of latkes, blintzes, and egg sandwiches on house-baked English muffins. Since opening earlier this month, it has drawn lines during its Friday-through-Monday service.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The sandwich that Asch and chef Sam Chertock devised satisfies that craving with an oniony potato pancake perched atop a slow-baked egg, whose firm texture helps the sandwich hold together. Tallarico\u2019s hoagie spread, blended with seasoned mayo, supplies a Philadelphia accent. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAre we breaking culinary boundaries? No,\u201d Asch said. \u201cIt\u2019s a latke on an egg-and-cheese sandwich.\u201d Customers can also add gribenes \u2014 chicken-skin cracklings \u2014 and have the English muffin slathered with schmaltz, or rendered chicken fat.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Schmaltz joins newer neighborhood arrivals including Little Susie\u2019s Coffee &amp; Pie and Hannah K Cafe. American Sardine Bar, which opened in 2011, is about two blocks north.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The couple bought the building at 1300 S. 18th St. in 2023, creating a wide-open room with an espresso station and order counter, six stools facing the kitchen, six more along the window, table seating, and a small merchandise counter.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The building previously housed the Pharmacy, a DIY music venue, art gallery, and coffee shop. Before that, it was an actual drugstore, a history still visible in the ramp leading toward the rear of the dining room. Toddlers have happily treated it as a runway while their parents wait for food.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>That neighborhood accessibility is central to Schmaltz\u2019s approach. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s a casual counter, not a full-scale Jewish restaurant or deli, Asch said. The opening menu is deliberately small. Besides the signature sandwich, cheese blintzes, and latkes, there\u2019s a roasted beet salad and a shawarma-spiced chicken salad sandwich on rye, plus coffee, cold brew, espresso drinks, teas, and soda.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>But no bagels.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI will die on this hill,\u201d Asch said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot more to Jewish restaurants than the bagel.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Selling bagels, he said, can quickly define a restaurant, requiring staff and equipment to produce large quantities while pushing the rest of the menu into supporting roles. Schmaltz may eventually serve a locally made bagel as part of a specific dish, but Asch does not want it to become a bagel shop.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Instead, the cooking draws broadly from the Ashkenazi and Eastern European food Asch and Chertock grew up eating. The blintzes, made from Asch\u2019s recipe, are filled with lightly sweetened farmer\u2019s cheese and served with Chertock\u2019s jam.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Asch, who grew up in Bryn Mawr and attended Episcopal Academy, did not initially plan a restaurant career. He later worked at Baology with Judy Ni and Andy Tessier before joining a.kitchen.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Ni and Tessier became mentors as Asch and Armstrong navigated zoning, vendors, construction, and the operational details that cannot be learned on the line.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThey took a huge weight off my shoulders of that knowledge burden,\u201d Asch said. \u201cThey\u2019re the reason we were able to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Armstrong, who grew up in Portland, Maine, studied theater at Brandeis before moving into investment and wealth management. She later earned an MBA at the Wharton School. Her work included chief-of-staff and operations roles, experience she likens to staging a complicated production.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHow do we make this whole orchestra, this whole production, work?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Chertock brings the deepest restaurant r\u00e9sum\u00e9 of the trio. Trained as an architect at Syracuse University, he worked at a Lambertville firm while cooking nights at Charcoal BYOB in Yardley, his home town. He later joined the opening team at K\u2019Far Cafe, worked his way up to sous chef, and went on to Zahav and Vernick Food &amp; Drink.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>He found Schmaltz almost by accident. Chertock, who once lived nearby, was biking through South Philadelphia when he noticed the restaurant name on the freshly painted building.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Schmaltz\u2019 immediately caught my attention,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Despite the term\u2019s cultural focus, Asch said Schmaltz is neither kosher nor intended as a political statement. Asch said his parents worried that openly identifying the restaurant as Jewish might invite problems, but he said the response has been overwhelmingly supportive.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe make food,\u201d Asch said. \u201cMaybe calling it Schmaltz is in itself a statement, but we can\u2019t live in fear about what might happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>For now, the more immediate challenge is keeping up with the crowd outside. Asch expects most regulars to come from within a few blocks rather than from Center City. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>That suits the couple, who bought the building with the idea of investing in the neighborhood where they live.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe want to nourish it,\u201d Armstrong said. \u201cWe want to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><i>Schmaltz, 1300 S. 18th St., <\/i><i>schmaltzphilly.com<\/i><i>.
