{"id":2750,"date":"2026-07-18T09:37:29","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T09:37:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2750"},"modified":"2026-07-18T09:37:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-18T09:37:29","slug":"im-proud-of-the-city-that-im-from-kurt-vile-on-why-his-new-album-is-called-philadelphias-been-good-to-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2750","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I\u2019m proud of the city that I\u2019m from\u2019: Kurt Vile on why his new album is called \u2018Philadelphia\u2019s Been Good To Me\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><audio><\/audio><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Kurt Vile\u2019s love of Philly \u2014 and Philadelphia\u2019s affection for Kurt Vile \u2014 has never been in question.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2748\">A Philly man pleaded guilty to stealing nude images of 5 Pennsylvania women and posting them online<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>For the cover of <i>Constant Hitmaker<\/i>, the 2008 album that announced his arrival, Vile posed in front of a blown out wall \u201cthat looks like a Rauschenberg painting\u201d at the corner of Frankford and Norris, he recalls. \u201cThat stuff\u2019s beautiful, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Since 2012, a Steve \u201cESPO\u201d Powers mural that doubles as the cover for Vile\u2019s 2013 album <i>Wakin On A Pretty Daze <\/i>has adorned a wall at Front and Master Streets in Northern Liberties, visible to travelers headed north on the Market-Frankford El.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>With his signature mane and quizzical expression, Vile, who grew up in Lansdowne in Delaware County, has been the face of Philly\u2019s reign as the capital city of 21st century indie rock. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The city is embedded in Vile\u2019s music at every turn, from the \u201cI park for free!\u201d boast on the 2018 song \u201cLoading Zones\u201d to the cover of 2022\u2019s <i>Watch My Moves<\/i>, which pictures the Dad rock king wearing a crocodile mask in Wissahickon Valley Park, flanked by daughters Awilda and Delphine. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But Vile has never repped his hometown so hard as on his new album, <i>Philadelphia\u2019s Been Good To Me<\/i>, released in May. It includes shout-outs to Lincoln Drive, the Schuylkill, and Sun Ra, and an infectious single \u201cChance to Bleed\u201d that features Philadelphia gangsta rap pioneer Schoolly D in a video shot at Kung Fu Necktie.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><i>Philadelphia\u2019s Been Good To Me<\/i> even includes a playful taunt at two of Vile\u2019s classic rock favorites who dared to record songs with the word <i>Philadelphia<\/i> in the title. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cA couple of my heroes wrote a song,\u201d Vile talk-sings in \u201cYou Don\u2019t Know Cuz It\u2019s My Life.\u201d \u201cBut that ain\u2019t where they\u2019re from, so hey you don\u2019t know \/ But I still love you, Neil and the Boss.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Working in the wee hours in his basement OKV studio \u2014 which stands for \u201cOvernight Kurt Vile\u201d \u2014 in his fieldstone house in Mount Airy, Vile recalls, \u201cI was singing along to this keyboard track I had laid down, and that thought came to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vile, who had (legally) parked his Prius in a nearby loading zone, was talking at the Silk City Diner on the Sunday night of Memorial Day weekend where he would realize a long-held ambition: sitting in with centenarian saxophonist Marshall Allen and members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vile \u2014 who was wearing a Tammy Wynette T-shirt and MF Doom trucker\u2019s hat, with his 1965 Fender Jazzmaster Sunburst in the booth beside him (without a case) \u2014 explainedhis unique position in Philadelphia music history while dining on an Impossible Burger and Korean fried cauliflower.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cSpringsteen wrote the song \u2018Streets of Philadelphia\u2019 and Neil wrote \u2018Philadelphia,\u2019 and they\u2019re both on the soundtrack to <i>Philadelphia<\/i>, right?\u201d he says, referring to Jonathan Demme\u2019s 1993 AIDS drama.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI get where they\u2019re coming from, but it\u2019s still an assignment. They\u2019re singing about a city they don\u2019t know that well. I\u2019m proud of the city that I\u2019m from, and I\u2019m also lucky that I\u2019m from here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like my friend Mary Lattimore, who plays the harp.\u201d (And has given lessons to Vile\u2019s daughters, who also both play guitar.) \u201cShe\u2019s not from Philly, but she lived here forever, so it feels like home to her, even though she\u2019s in LA now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Adam Granduciel of the War on Drugs, with whom Vile frequently teamed up when both were aspiring artists in the 2000s, also grew up elsewhere and now lives in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re two of my oldest friends that were in the Philly scene forever, but they don\u2019t have the extended history that I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>The Philly fixture<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vile \u2014 who is the oldest boy among the 10 children of his SEPTA train operator father Charlie and stay-at-home mother Donna \u2014 is Philly-area born and bred. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the OG,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019m proud about. It\u2019s like Questlove, or something,\u201d though for all the Philly repping the Roots drummer does, he doesn\u2019t live here either.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vile, by contrast, is a Philadelphia fixture. When artists like country rebel Margo Price, Australian rocker Courtney Barnett, and North African desert blues band Tinariwen have come to town, there was one way to know for sure they were in Philadelphia: Kurt Vile was standing next to them onstage. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In 2024, MJ Lenderman covered Warren Zevon\u2019s \u201cWerewolves of London\u201d at Union Transfer and paid homage with an altered lyric: \u201cI saw Kurt Vile walkin\u2019 in a pretty haze \/ His hair was perfect!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vile plays the Dell Music Center with his band the Violators on July 25 as part of Connor Barwin\u2019s Make The World Better Concert Weekend. He played Barwin\u2019s first MTWB Foundation benefit in 2014, which raised money to build playgrounds and rec centers throughout the city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t follow football and I didn\u2019t know who he was,\u201d Vile says, recalling meeting Barwin at a show. \u201cHe walked in and he looked amazing. He was so tall, like a [expletive] Eagle. He was just a genuine fan. I love reconnecting with Connor and watching him do his thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vile\u2019s July 25 show is the second of two MTWB nights at the Dell. The first-night headliners are 1990s alt-rock heroes Pavement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cPavement was my gateway drug to indie rock,\u201d Vile says. \u201cStephen Malkmus was my hero. I got my first job as a busboy at the Blue Comet on Baltimore Pike and I would spend all my money on Pavement CDs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Now, Vile is friends with Malkmus, and was stoked when he found out they were both playing the MTWB weekend \u2014 until he realized that he has a gig in Boston the night Pavement is playing. \u201cI\u2019m missing Pavement by a day,\u201d he says. \u201cWhich I\u2019m not happy about.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vile, 46, has spent his entire life living in the Philly area, save for 2002-03 when he followed his wife Suzanne Lang to Boston while she got a master\u2019s degree at Emerson College. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2746\">Touring Camden\u2019s Cathedral Kitchen, Andy Kim calls Trump\u2019s cuts to SNAP \u2018devastating and cruel\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>He worked as a forklift operator for an air freight company. \u201cThe most ball bustin\u2019 blue-collar job there is,\u201d he says. Before he mastered the machinery, \u201cI got made fun of a lot my first year. But then I got really good at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Returning to Philly and moving to Northern Liberties, he went to work for Philadelphia Brewing Company, where he was hired by future pizza sensei Joe Beddia who was roommates with Granduciel. \u201cThey were all blown away by my forklift skills,\u201d recalls Vile. \u201cAnd that\u2019s how I met Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>At PBC, Vile met Jack Rose, the late Philadelphia guitarist who, like Vile, was a fan of influential American Primitive guitarist John Fahey. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Asked to name his top five Philadelphia artists, Vile starts with Rose. He then adds Purling Hiss guitarist Mike Polizze, and psychedelic folk singer Meg Baird, Petty Bunco label head and singer Richie Charles, along with Schoolly D. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIs that five?\u201d It is, but Vile has a couple more: Marshall Allen-slash-Sun Ra, and rockin\u2019 country band Florry. \u201cThey\u2019re so fun and excitable and young,\u201d Vile says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>\u2018Mount Airy really saved my life\u2019<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vile moved to Mount Airy with Lang and Awilda and Delphine \u2014 who are now 16 and 13 \u2014 in 2016. \u201cI need a driveway,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI love Mount Airy and Germantown,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s still so much old-school Philly in Germantown. And Mount Airy really saved my life. I love that there\u2019s forest, and I have room to think.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cBut I can still go to the city any time, and it\u2019s so quick,\u201d driving his Prius down Lincoln and Kelly Drives. \u201cYou go in through the Art Museum, and it\u2019s a classy way to go in, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Over 10 albums, Vile has continued to develop a raw, unhurried signature sound. He often seems to be talking to himself in a bemused drawl over patient jams that turn out to be transfixing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>What country star Keith Urban once said of Vile\u2019s 2015 hit \u201cPretty Pimpin\u2019\u201d in naming it as one of five songs he wished he\u2019d written applies to Vile\u2019s songwriting in general: \u201cI don\u2019t know how he wrote it, but it sounds like pure stream of consciousness.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>\u2018Philadelphia\u2019s Been Good To Me\u2019<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>On <i>Philadelphia\u2019s Been Good To Me<\/i> \u2014 whose cover features a photo by Memphis photographer William Eggleston \u2014 that deft, uncanny approach is evident on tracks like \u201c99th Song,\u201d an ode to a loop pedal that turns out to be a paean to domestic bliss. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cStoned on music, well, the best kind of high,\u201d he sings. \u201cGot love in my life, and three girls by my side.\u201d Later, the album includes a more straightforward love song: \u201cEvery Time I Look At You,\u201d which begins: \u201cEvery time I look at you, sparks fly from my eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>At Allen\u2019s birthday party, Vile took a seat next to guitarist DM Hotep at the rear of the stage. \u201cI was playing spacey, bendy Sonic Youth-hybrid leads bendy,\u201d he said afterward. \u201cI felt really calm up there.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A few days after that party, Vile celebrated the release of <i>Philadelphia\u2019s Been Good To Me<\/i> at the Triangle Tavern in South Philly, where 200-plus fans lined up to purchase the album and receive a free vegan cheesesteak as a bonus. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><svg><g><g><g><\/g><\/g><\/g><\/svg><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>View this post on Instagram<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vile headed out with the Violators in June, and checked inbefore a sold-out show at San Francisco\u2019s Castro Theatre this month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a little discombobulated today,\u201d he says, ordering a late afternoon large coffee and glazed doughnut. \u201cIt was a late night.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The night before, Vile enjoyed a day off at Festa, a beloved San Fran karaoke bar closing this year he wanted to visit one last time. \u201cI\u2019m shy at first, but then everybody sings and I get up, too.\u201d His go-to is \u201cStand Back\u201d by Stevie Nicks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The tour, Vile says, \u201cis going good, man.\u201d This trek has made him rethink the streaming era. He\u2019s a fan of physical media, and feels \u201cthe past was more simple and honest.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cBut now the way people can consume your catalog from streaming, the younger people can binge my catalog like Netflix, and I can tell that they know all of my music. I just feel that people are connected. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis is my 10th record, and I\u2019ve accumulated all these songs that have emotional qualities combined with a dreamy, pretty, hypnotic thing, and then it rocks live with my electric guitar. It just keeps evolving. The songs are simple enough, but the possibilities are endless.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>On the bus, Vile has been keeping Philly \u2014 and Delco \u2014 close to his heart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p> \u201cI\u2019m watching <i>Mare of Easttown<\/i>,\u201d he says. \u201cI never saw it, and now I\u2019m obsessed, just watching all the Delaware County locations and hearing Kate Winslet say a sentence half-Delco, half-British.\u201d He slips into a Winslet impression: \u201cI\u2019m hoping for an <i>an-<\/i>swer,\u201d and chuckles to himself. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s my favorite show in a long time,\u201d says Vile, who has<i> Task<\/i> cued up next. \u201cAnd it\u2019s got Mannequin Pussy in it. Does the director not know who I am?\u201d he wonders. \u201cI guess I\u2019ve got to get in touch.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe timing is interesting, \u2018cause I\u2019ve been spending a lot of time in Delco lately,\u201d says Vile, who\u2019s been hanging with his parents and recently dropped in at his old haunt Paul Revere Pizza in Lansdowne. \u201cNow I\u2019m traveling, and I\u2019m touring my Philly record, and I\u2019m loving it. I\u2019m loving being somewhere else and not in Philly every night. But I\u2019m watching <i>Mare of Easttown<\/i>.
