Here\u2019s what the national media thinks about the Birds and their chances this year.<\/a><\/p><div><\/div><p>After 30 years, this will be the Jewish day camp\u2019s last season due to low enrollment and a financial deficit, Ramah officials said.<\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>There are 164 campers this summer \u2014 about half the 2014 enrollment.<\/p><div><\/div><p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have the money to run it, and people aren\u2019t sending their kids,\u201d said Debbie Albert, former president of the nonprofit Camp Ramah in the Poconos, which runs theCheltenham program.<\/p><div><\/div><p>In Cheltenham, kids from pre-K into high school dance, swim, practice Hebrew, learn about their faith, and connect with recently returned IDF soldiers for up to six weeks.<\/p><div><\/div><p>\u201cIt\u2019s really heartbreaking,\u201d said Sara Ravitch, a longtime staffer whose 4-year-old son attended the camp for the first time this year. \u201cIt\u2019s a place where you can feel proud to be Jewish.\u201d<\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>AlthoughCheltenham is closing, the Ramah network has expanded elsewhere in recent years, adding Boston and Los Angeles day camps in 2023 and 2024. The closure will not affect the Poconos overnight camp, according to a June email addressed to the Ramah community announcing the Cheltenham closing.<\/p><div><\/div><p>Ramah has competed with a number of secular day camps in the Montgomery County area. While Ramah campers take a three-minute bus ride to a nearby pool, other day camps like Sesame\/Rockwood in Blue Bell have five pools on site.<\/p><div><\/div><p>And some local Jewish youth programs are thriving, but the day camp is also located in an older community: Montco\u2019s Jewish population grew slightly from 2009 to 2019,  to U.S. Census data in a report for the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, but more than a third in southeastern Montco were 65 or older, and just 11% were under 18.<\/p><div><\/div><p>Ramah\u2019s leaders have tried for years to sustain the Cheltenham program, Albert said. While the overnight camp is \u201cthriving,\u201d the day camp has been losing money for over a decade.<\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>\u201cWe cried over the data,\u201d Albert said. \u201cThis is killing all of us.\u201d <\/p><div><\/div><p>Then there are the facilities: Ramah rents space at the Perelman Jewish Day School, owned by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, Albert said, and Ramah officials believe their landlords may want to sell that property. (\u201cThere is no property currently for sale on the campus, and the closure of Ramah Day Camp is unrelated to any federation property transaction,\u201c a federation spokesperson said.)<\/p><div><\/div><p>Ramah was never able to afford its own day camp site, which would cost \u201cmillions and millions of dollars,\u201d Albert said.<\/p><div><\/div><p>Ramah has been central to some Pennsylvania communities , even earning a shout-out on the Jenkintown-set sitcom <i>The Goldbergs<\/i>.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2929\">Trevor Zegras inked a major contract extension with the Flyers. Next up: Lending his time and service to the Shoulder Check cause.<\/a><\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>\u201cAs a Jewish community of Greater Philadelphia, it is a huge loss,\u201d said Rachel Bloom, a former camper and staffer.<\/p><div><\/div><p>Bloom attended Ramah Day Camp\u2019s first summer back in 1996. She returned on staff in 2005 and met her husband, then a 25-year-old sports director in a navy blue Hillel shirt with cutoff sleeves. <\/p><div><\/div><p>\u201cMost of our bridal party were camp people,\u201d Bloom said, and their wedding was filled with Jewish traditions: pre-ceremony <i>tisch <\/i>and<i> badeken<\/i>, and an impromptu sermon at the rehearsal dinner.<\/p><div><\/div><p>Without Ramah, \u201cI don\u2019t think I would\u2019ve had all of these things at my wedding,\u201d Bloom said. \u201cGoing to a Jewish camp is like an extra special gift that is very hard to explain.\u201d<\/p><div><\/div><div><\/div><p>Though officials have long fretted over the camp\u2019s future \u2014 the nonprofit did a multiyear review with a group of staff, parents, and board members, CEO Miryam Seid said \u2014 some staff and alumni felt blindsided by the news.<\/p><div><\/div><p>\u201cIt feels a little bit \u2014 I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s a betrayal, but they weren\u2019t so transparent with how many struggles they were facing,&#8221; Ravitch said.<\/p><div><\/div><p>Bloom said she sometimes attends Shabbat at the camp, and she never noticed their shrinking numbers.<\/p><div><\/div><p>\u201cThere\u2019s always been spirit, no matter what,\u201d Bloom said. \u201cThe spirit fills the space.\u201d <\/p><div><\/div><div><div><div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Inquirer logo\" class=\"wp-image-2933\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/5e4db317ebfbc9ee4ea58d2e0d6b8ba8.png\" width=\"162\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Inquirer Greater Abington<\/p><\/div><div><p>A Weekly Newsletter<\/p><p>Want to get Inquirer Greater Abington straight to your inbox every week?
