Mikie Sherrill was handed an election security crisis that took place under her predecessor just days after President Donald Trump\u2019s administration pushed out claims of widespread noncitizen voting.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2969\">HBCU football is returning to the Linc this fall when Lincoln University hosts Virginia Union<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill revealed Tuesday that about 6,600 noncitizens had been illegally registered as voters in New Jersey due to a system error in the state\u2019s department of motor vehicle voter registration program under former Gov. Phil Murphy. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The governor said less than 400 of those people voted. There\u2019s no evidence that their ballots changed any election outcomes, but the news has thrust the Garden State into the middle of the national debate over election security. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis failure didn\u2019t occur on my watch but accountability starts now,\u201d she said at a news conference Tuesday. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Here\u2019s what to know about what happened and how and what the fallout will be \u2014 both in Trenton and Washington. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>How many noncitizens got registered in New Jersey and how many voted?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>About 6,600 people who identified themselves as noncitizens were registered to vote in New Jersey between June 2023 and June 2024\u201cthrough no fault of their own\u201d due to the glitch, though fewer than 400 cast a ballot, Sherrill said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill said at a news conference that the error \u201cwas caught and stopped in 2024\u201d but her administration is now working to remove those hundreds of voters from the rolls. She said they could have voted in any elections since then but there is no evidence at this time that they could have swayed any results. She said they were registered as Democrats, Republicans, and mostly unaffiliated, and scattered throughout the state.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>She said her team is \u201ctaking a hard look at the process failures that occurred under the previous administration and the guardrails we can put down for the future.\u201d Murphy declined to comment through a spokesperson.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill, a former member of Congress who began her term in January, campaigned on changing the culture in Trenton and distanced herself from Murphy on the campaign trail but remained cordial with him. Her tone sharply changed this week.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis entire situation is unacceptable,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s unacceptable that the vendor released software with such a glaring error. It\u2019s unacceptable that the MVC (Motor Vehicle Commission) took a year to get this fixed, and it\u2019s unacceptable that no one in the previous administration brought this to light, demanded accountability, or took action when it happened years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>How did this happen?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill called the issue a \u201cserious software error in New Jersey\u2019s motor vehicle system.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>New Jersey began automatic voter registration in 2018, which allows New Jersey citizens to be automatically registered to vote when they get an ID at the MVC unless they decline to be registered. Since 2021, noncitizens have been able to obtain driver\u2019s licenses in the state, but they\u2019re not supposed to be registered to vote.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The noncitizens who were improperly registered had answered \u201cno\u201d when asked on a keypad at theMVC whether they were a U.S. citizen, Sherrill said. But she said the system registered them anyway \u201cthrough no fault of their own.\u201d She said the error could put those individuals\u2019 immigration status at risk. It would be hypocritical for the state to charge the individuals and she wants to protect them, she said, but she \u201cwould not put it past\u201d the federal government to charge the individuals.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a North Jersey Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for governor last year, called for a national audit into IDEMIA, the vendor whose software was used for the registrations.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>But IDEMIA pointed a finger at the New Jersey Department of State, noting that while the vendor\u2019s role is to transmit information between the motor vehicle and state departments, it\u2019s ultimately the state department\u2019s responsibility to verify voter eligibility.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cInformation submitted by IDEMIA must still be validated and adjudicated by the Division of Elections,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>When did Gov. Sherrill find out?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill said she learned about the error last Wednesday, the day before Trump\u2019s speech. She announced the discovery on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>What is Gov. Sherrill doing about it?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill said she immediately ordered an investigation when she learned about the issue and ordered the removal of the noncitizens from the voter rolls. She said that Rosalie Johnson, who Sherrill appointed as the new Motor Vehicle Commission administrator this year, already began replacing the system vendor.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The governor said her administration hired an independent firm, CSG Law, to conduct the investigation. She said \u201cthey will be moving very quickly\u201d and already found the figures she\u2019s been citing. She said she will \u201cpresent the findings\u201d of the investigation to the public.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Johnson said she expects to launch the new vendor next year and is working on creating additional safeguards to regularly review information before sending it to the elections division. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill said her administration is looking at ways to make the state\u2019s elections more secure and vowed to hold any government workers accountable.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cShould there be anyone that is identified that is still working in this space that has not done the right thing, I will hold them personally accountable for this,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2967\">Pa. state lawmakers found common ground on this data center policy \u2014 but still couldn\u2019t reach a deal<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>How is the Trump administration responding?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The Trump administration and other prominent Republicans are using theissue to call for the passage of the SAVE Act, which is a federal bill that Republicans say would improve election security but Democrats warn would suppress millions of voters.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said in a post on X that the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice \u201cis investigating this unlawful dilution of American votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Additionally, the department argued in a letter that the incident justifies the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to obtain the state\u2019s unredacted voter rolls.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Vice President J.D. Vance called on Sens. Cory Booker and Andy Kim, both Democrats, to support the legislation in a post on X given the issue in their home state. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf only there was a way to stop this type of \u2018software error\u2019 that allowed non citizens to vote in our elections,\u201d Vance said in the tongue-in-cheek post.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Booker said he trusts the Sherrill administration to solve the problem and criticized \u201cthose who will choose to weaponize this issue.\u201d Kim declined to comment on the issue.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>Why is the timing beneficial for the president? <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The news came at an opportune time for Trump, just days after his speech in which he reignited conspiracy theories about his 2020 election loss. The same day, theWhite House shared claims of widespread noncitizen voting, including in New Jersey. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin claimed that more than 35,000 noncitizens could be registered in New Jersey. The department has not shared how it arrived at that number, and experts cautioned it could include new citizens who have not been updated in a system meant to check work eligibility.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill said her administration received a letter with that 35,000 figure after Trump\u2019s speech \u2013 which was also after she said she learned about the 6,600 noncitizen voters.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe have asked them for any evidence of this, where they got that number, who this is,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve received nothing back yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill said that the president \u201cknows that if he provides us any credible information we will of course investigate it\u201d but that he has \u201czero credibility on the issue of election integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor the past 10 years he\u2019s cried wolf and peddled bizarre conspiracy theories about fraud with no evidence,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Trump called for the passage of a national proof of citizenship requirement Wednesday during a speech in Georgia, but he did not directly reference New Jersey. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>How will New Jersey lawmakers respond?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>State Sen. Anthony Bucco, the Senate Republican leader whorepresentsparts of North Jersey, said the state should \u201cat the very least\u201d suspend the automatic voter registration program until a full investigation is complete and next steps are made clear.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>He also called on the state to enact a voter identification requirement. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>New Jersey requires identification or a Social Security number to register to vote and first time voters who registered to vote by mail may need to provide ID at the polls. But overall, mostvoters do not need to show ID at the polls in New Jersey.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Republican-led efforts to enact legislation following this incident are unlikely to succeed in Trenton because Democrats hold a supermajority in the Assembly and a majority in the Senate.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sherrill said at a news conference Tuesday that the problem isn\u2019t with the state\u2019s laws, but rather with how the stategovernment has been operating \u2013 further pushing blame on her predecessor. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI see no reason why our state cannot run our election system well and have a computer program that can operate well, and should any problem occur it should be caught quickly \u2026 it\u2019s a problem with accountability,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a problem with making sure government is effective and running well, and it really is a lack of responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>Has this happened before?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In 2017 Pennsylvania Secretary of State Al Schmidt, a Republican city commissioner in Philadelphia at the time, uncovered and resolved a similar glitch at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in which all Pennsylvania drivers were asked if they wanted to be registered to vote regardless of citizenship status. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Schmidt said at the time that the glitch led to 168 noncitizens registering to vote in Philadelphia but that just 44 ballots were cast in the city as a result.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Schmidt has since said that noncitizen voting is rare and that the threat has been exaggerated.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=2966\">Judge gives Pennsylvania the green light to fund abortions through Medicaid<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><i>Staff writer Michelle Baruchman contributed reporting. <\/i><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Noncitizens were registered to vote in New Jersey before Sherrill was governor but the revelation has thrust the state into Trump&#8217;s national debate over voting laws.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2970,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[14,13],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2971","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-new-jersey","category-politics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
