An early celebration of the legendary saxophonist\u2019s 100th birthday (which actually falls on Sept. 23), the concert featured Trane\u2019s son, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, backed by the Fabulous Philadelphians on an evening of newly orchestrated renditions of pieces written by and associated with his father.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Composer Carlos Simon curated the program, enlisting a host of arrangers to reinterpret Coltrane classics in a symphonic setting. The repertoire spanned much of the saxophonist\u2019s career; from his tenures with Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis to later masterpieces like \u201cA Love Supreme.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>A break in the summer\u2019s unrelenting heat greeted the Orchestra at the Mann, virtually just across the Schuylkill from the Coltrane home in Strawberry Mansion \u2014 itself undergoing a major renovation in time for a yearlong centennial celebration kicking off in September. The breezes greeted a modest crowd that made up for lack of numbers in vigorously voiced enthusiasm, especially during the evening\u2019s most bombastic moments \u2014 an acrobatic \u201cGiant Steps\u201d and the precision, program-closing \u201cImpressions\u201d greeted with roars.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The night\u2019s loudest ovation may have been reserved for native son Johnathan Blake, the drummer in Coltrane\u2019s stellar quartet. Blake\u2019s father, violinist John Blake Jr., was a regular collaborator with McCoy Tyner, pianist in the revered John Coltrane Quartet, providing another direct connection to the Legacy in the program\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Ravi Coltrane was less than two years old when his father died. At 60, he\u2019s reached an age two decades older than his father ever achieved, and boasts an estimable career of his own. He could be forgiven for being ambivalent about the elder Coltrane\u2019s looming shadow, but he played passionately throughout his first encounter with Simon\u2019s orchestral program. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Past iterations have featured soloists like saxophonist Joe Lovano and trumpeter Terence Blanchard.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>If John Coltrane\u2019s place among the pantheon of 20th-century musical masters seems assured, many of the arrangers seemed determined to place him in conversation with other luminaries. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=3006\">Why labor unions are sticking with two Pa. Republicans, even as control of the U.S. House hangs in the balance<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Steven Feifke\u2019s take on \u201cGiant Steps\u201d began with a Wagnerian flourish, while Andy Milne couched \u201cAcknowledgement,\u201d the first movement of \u201cA Love Supreme,\u201d in horns that dawned like a Copland pastorale over harp shimmers. Monk\u2019s \u201cCrepuscule with Nellie,\u201d again arranged by Milne, seemed to navigate through Leonard Bernstein\u2019s midcentury cityscapes.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>As is so often the case with jazz-meets-classical hybrids such as this, the Orchestra was often relegated to set dressing for the soloists. Did those famed strings really add anything but volume to the stabs of \u201cSo What\u201d or \u201cBlue Train\u201d? Was the profound ballad \u201cNaima\u201d helped or hindered by the sentimental swells swathing its incisive melody?<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Simon took the greatest chances with his own arrangements. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Duke Ellington\u2019s \u201cIn a Sentimental Mood,\u201d which Coltrane recorded with its composer in 1962, seemed to ripple through the ensemble underneath Ravi\u2019s aching statement of the melody. The fervent protest piece \u201cAlabama,\u201d penned in response to the 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, felt aptly stark and dramatic, fueling Ravi\u2019s raw-edge, impassioned soloing. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Many of the concert\u2019s highlights arrived in similar moments of alchemy between composition, orchestration, and musicians. Arranger Tim Davies\u2019 use of lush horns seemed to imagine \u201cCentral Park West\u201d as an early morning reverie in the park, which Ravi and pianist David Virelles picked up in their solos as if on meditative strolls \u2014 the saxophonist\u2019s a hazy daydream, the pianist\u2019s a solemn rumination.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>At times Ravi directly evoked his father\u2019s voice, beginning his solo on \u201cSo What\u201d with a direct quote, weaving his solo on \u201cAcknowledgement\u201d out of ideas from the entirety of \u201cA Love Supreme.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Virelles took a different approach, conjuring striking moments of abstraction from sudden dissonances and violent clusters, or jarring hints of his Cuban roots.
