They all contribute to one another\u2019s records and play in each other\u2019s bands. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The Historic NJ collective core consists of just five musicians, four of whom gathered in their subterranean studio for an interview on a recent summer day. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Emily Moales records as Star Moles \u2014 a self-described \u201csci-fi DIY Wi-Fi band.\u201d She has a new album with a cheeky title that nods to AC\/DC called <i>Highway To Hell<\/i>. It\u2019s one of the most acclaimed releases of the year.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Kevin Basko is super prolific as Rubber Band Gun, and is the label\u2019s founder and producer. He also teams with his housemate Moales in the brash Hot Machine, which he compares to Gorillaz, \u201clike a fake band, something we can have a little more fun with.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>And siblings Sam and Louise Sullivan are a folk-pop duo whose third album, <i>Love &amp; Devotion<\/i>, released this week. It moved pop culture magazine Paste to call them \u201cthe next great family band.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Drummer and comedian Jem Seidel, who keeps the Historic NJ beat in the studio and on stage, is the fifth core member of the collective. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>\u201cThe song comes first\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Moales, 27, is a New Hampshire native, who started making music with Basko \u2014 a Berklee School of Music grad who has toured as a member of indie band Foxygen \u2014 after they met online in 2017. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Basko, 34, grew up in Monmouth County in Central Jersey, where he came up with the Historic NJ moniker.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>He was intrigued by Moales\u2019 imaginative \u201870s style folk rock. \u201cShe reminded me of Stevie Nicks,\u201d he says and admits he initially clicked on her Twitter profile because she used a Barbra Streisand photo as her profile picture.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere was an instant sense that we were on the same page,\u201d Moales recalls. It took only a week to record their first work together, the Star Moles album <i>Camelot<\/i>, in 2018. Two weeks before the pandemic began in 2020, Moales and Basko moved to Philly, a city where he had made friends while working as a touring musician. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The Sullivans grew up in Portland, Oregon and New York, raised by music loving parents who schooled them in Woody Guthrie, Richard and Linda Thompson, and traditional Irish music. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sam Sullivan, 35, who lives in Germantown, moved to Philly in 2016 to take a job teaching English literature at Germantown Friends School, where he still works. His sister, 30, followed a few years later and has also taught at GFS, but is now focused on music and her ceramics business.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In 2022, Basko messaged the Sullivans on Instagram after seeing a video of the siblings performing in a West Philly backyard. They soon joined the Historic NJ song-making family. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe all share a philosophy, you know?\u201d said Moales, who\u2019s worked retail and food service jobs since moving to the city, including at sustainable general store Good Buy Supply. \u201cAll of us here, we\u2019re just truly songwriters at heart. We hold the song as holy, above everything.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe vibe comes later,\u201d Basko said. \u201cThe song comes first.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Once assembled, the Historic NJ crew began quietly \u2014 and quickly \u2014 making music under the radar.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The Sullivan\u2019s debut album <i>Papier M\u00e2ch\u00e9<\/i>, which includes \u201cHoly Philly,\u201d an ode to their adopted hometown, came out in 2023. Star Moles\u2019 EP <i>Snack Monster<\/i>, inspired by Andreas Capellanus\u2019 12th century treatise <i>Rules of Courtly Love<\/i>, was released last year.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Basko makes music at a dizzying pace. The multi-instrumentalist who cites Todd Rundgren as a \u201cmusician producer\u201d role model has a staggering 84 releases available on his Bandcamp page. Listeners are truthfully advised: \u201cThere\u2019s something here for everyone.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>He\u2019s also made music for TV shows like <i>Walker<\/i> and <i>Superman &amp; Lois<\/i>. And he welcomes clients like Brooklyn violinist Marji Snemasnki, who was due in for a session later the day of the interview. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>People are getting hip<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s all this great stuff happening, with people getting hip to what we\u2019ve been doing, said Basko, speaking while sitting cross legged in front of a control board with a custom made big red button that he presses to start recording sessions with dramatic flair.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=3084\">Steve Gansey received a whole lot of brotherly love after LeBron James picked the Sixers<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Jones, his pint sized Boston terrier, sits in his lap. The carpeted room is full of old school analog recording equipment, with a kitschy guitar shaped lamp illuminating posters from three Muppets movies.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s no greater feeling when a second ago we didn\u2019t have it, and a minute later, we do. Prince talks about that. People don\u2019t know what they\u2019re missing when they don\u2019t have that experience of creation,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>People are definitely getting hip to Historic NJ. <i>Highway To Hell<\/i> is a unanimous best-of 2026 pick by taste-making sites like Stereogum and Brooklyn Vegan. The album, which came out in February, will be re-released by a larger, yet-to-be-announced indie label this fall. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cEmily\u2019s leading the pack in terms of pure industry success,\u201d said Basko. \u201cI keep making the joke that she\u2019s falling into the volcano in a ceremonial way, into an industry that isn\u2019t always kind. It \u2019s like <i>[Indiana Jones and the] Temple of Doom<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The spotlight is also shining on the Sullivans, who have sung together all their lives. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOur dad really loved music,\u201d Louise Sullivan said. \u201cHe wanted his family to play music. They would give us a song to learn and we would sing it at the end of dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cLike Pete Seeger songs, or the Watersons, or \u2018Here We Come A-wassailing,\u2019\u201d said Sam. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOr Kirsty MacColl,\u201d added Louise. \u201cSam would play mandolin and I would sing.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Sam Sullivan calls himself \u201ca failed poet.\u201d He had never written songs before moving to Philadelphia. But while planning to work on graphic arts projects, he played guitar instead and started putting words to music.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cSam is one of the most brilliant songwriters I\u2019ve ever heard,\u201d said Basko, \u201cI\u2019ve been trying to be a songwriter my whole life. So for Sam to be just \u2018Oh I started just a few years ago\u2019 is mind boggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not really a musician,\u201d said Sam Sullivan. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Last year, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco put the Sullivans\u2019 album <i>Sweet Enough<\/i> on his 10 best list, calling it \u201creally beautiful, well-crafted folk-pop\u201d with \u201cguitar parts I find really fun to learn.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>That led to a high profile gig at Wilco\u2019s Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, Mass. last month, which turned into a coming-out party for the collective. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The Sullivans played a stripped-down set inside MassMOCA, the contemporary art museum where the festival is held, as well as a crowd pleasing outdoor show, backed by their Historic NJ compadres. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><svg><g><g><g><\/g><\/g><\/g><\/svg><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>View this post on Instagram<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt went great,\u201d said Louise Sullivan. \u201cWe rocked our little hearts out,\u201d her brother added.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>An elusive band<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Opportunities to see the Historic NJ groups perform live are scarce. In May, the whole crew banded together and played a two hour show at Johnny Brenda\u2019s. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Star Moles\u2019 last solo show was on Friday, opening for Hannah Cohen at 118 North in Wayne. And the Sullivans have one gig that requires a road trip: opening for Iron &amp; Wine in Lowell, Mass. on Aug. 7. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The siblings would love to become a touring band, but will have to wait, probably till next year when Sam has the summer off from teaching.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Meantime, there\u2019s music to be made. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>On a whiteboard in the Historic NJ studio, Basko and Moales worked out the track listing for the next Rubber Band Gun album, due next month. And Sam Sullivan was working up songs for another release with his sister, which they hope to release by year\u2019s end. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe want to play shows,\u201d said Louise Sullivan. \u201cBut you have to make music to play shows, and I feel like that\u2019s the thing we love to do.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Everyone nods in agreement. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make the next thing already. That\u2019s what\u2019s invigorating.
