{"id":3460,"date":"2026-08-01T21:08:05","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T21:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=3460"},"modified":"2026-08-01T21:08:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T21:08:05","slug":"new-barbers-hall-a-cornerstone-of-philadelphias-black-heritage-celebrates-its-historic-run-before-saying-goodbye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=3460","title":{"rendered":"New Barber\u2019s Hall, a cornerstone of Philadelphia\u2019s Black heritage, celebrates its historic run before saying goodbye"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div><audio><\/audio><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s soon to be \u201cBye Bye Blackbird\u201d for New Barber\u2019s Hall, an iconic Black cultural space that\u2019s brought jazz, revelry, and community to North Philadelphia for nearly 50 years. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=3458\">\u2018They don\u2019t pay you to be hurt\u2019: Landon Dickerson says he\u2019s learned his lesson about rushing back from injury<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>On Saturday, the combination music venue, restaurant, and ballroom located on the 1400 block of West Oxford Street celebrated what will be one of its last hurrahs \u2014 the longtime owner, Jake Adams, has sold the building.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Adams and his wife, Sarah, said they plan to keep the joint open for as long as they see fit, though at some point the buyer \u2014 neighboring Temple University \u2014 will take over the property to enact plans not yet revealed. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Before curtains are called, local leaders and hundreds of loyal patrons gathered to celebrate decades of good times and cultural milestones that took place at New Barber\u2019s Hall, a three-story brick building that dates back to the 1800s and was once a social hub for the city\u2019s Black barbers. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>While there was plenty of talk about icons who had once played gigs or simply passed through \u2014 from Miles Davis and John Coltrane to Patti LaBelle and Boyz II Men \u2014 the afternoon\u2019s focus was largely on Adams, who has diligently played host since purchasing the building in the late 1970s. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>To honor the duo, the celebration included the unveiling of Philadelphia\u2019s newest street sign, designating that portion of West Oxford Street as \u201cJake and Sarah Adams Way.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor almost 50 years being a business leader here in the city, Jake has given back numerous times,\u201d said City Councilmember Jeffery Young, whose district covers much of North Philadelphia, as he announced the new placard. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen we announced we were doing this, people said, \u2018Oh my god, I had my baby shower there, my wedding reception there, I met my spouse there.\u2019\u201d Young said. \u201cThat\u2019s what this place is.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Adams, who in addition to owning New Barber\u2019s Hall was a Democratic leader of the city\u2019s 14th Ward, gave bittersweet remarks as he thanked the crowd for years of support. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI tried to fix the building, I tried to make sure that everybody had a great time,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The sale is the latest development in the building\u2019s lengthy history. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Originally constructed in the 1860s, it evolved over the decades to house various civic and fraternal organizations such as the National Council for Jewish Women and the Quaker City Wheelmen, and in the early 20th century it spent a time as a bicycle factory. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=3456\">Inside the Eagles\u2019 intense safety competition, where \u2018we\u2019re all pushing each other\u2019 but not everyone can win<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The Barber\u2019s Hall name came about when Black barbers pooled their money to purchase the building in 1949. It soon became a hub for the city\u2019s growing Black community, and musicians staying at the nearby Chesterfield Hotel \u2014 listed in the Jim Crow-era \u201cGreen Book\u201d \u2014 often stopped by to play. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Adams and his older brother purchased the building in 1978, running it as a jazz venue and soul-food restaurant. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In addition to LaBelle, greats like Isaac Hayes, Grover Washington Jr., and Robert \u201cBootsie\u201d Barnes graced the room (in an oft-repeated tale, a teenage Jill Scott was turned away because she was underage).<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The building was set to receive a historic designation from the city\u2019s Historical Commission in 2024 that would have safeguarded it from demolition. But at the last minute, Adams had a change of heart about the nomination, saying he did not want his children to inherit a building with strict restrictions for potential buyers. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Temple, seeking to expand its footprint under president John Fry, quietly snatched up the building in 2026 for $2.3 million. The school will \u201cexplore further uses for the property, specifically related to how it might support the soon-to-be-completed campus development plan,\u201d it said in a statement, according to <i>Philadelphia Business Journal. <\/i><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In the meantime, Adams told revelers Saturday that the true coda for New Barber\u2019s Hall won\u2019t come until he says so, adding that Temple had agreed to the arrangement. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>For those like Lisa Sanders, who grew up just around the corner from the venue, that day will mark the end of an era. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a part of our family history,\u201d said Sanders, 58, recounting countless birthday parties and platters of shrimp and chicken at the hall.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely been a pleasure, and [Jake and Sarah] deserve it,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll really miss Barber\u2019s Hall \u2014 but as long as I can still go, I\u2019ll be happy about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=3454\">LeBron James could live in NYC as a Sixer.
