The attendees murmured as they admired the homes of the streetcar suburb. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>This was \u201cNeighborhood Jawnts,\u201d a free, hyper-localized tour running throughout a diverse swath of Philadelphia\u2019s neighborhoods this summer and into the fall. The \u201cjawnts\u201d \u2014 Get it? Like \u201cjaunts\u201d but Philly-style \u2014 are an effort by the city\u2019s tourism arm to engage every locale, from Africatown to the Far Northeast, in the Semiquincentennial. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cPhiladelphia\u2019s a city of neighborhoods,\u201d said Kathryn Ott Lovell, president and CEO of Philadelphia Visitor Center Corp. and Philadelphia250, the nonprofit in charge of planning the 250th celebrations. The series is a collaboration between Ott Lovell\u2019s organizations, with sponsorships from the city and Fulton Bank, which allow the tours to be offered at no cost. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to make sure that people have the opportunity to get to know the whole city and to get to know the city through the neighborhoods and the diversity of our city \u2014 the cultures, the communities, the histories,\u201d Ott Lovell said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The tours, which began in late May and will run until October, feature a different area weekly, totaling 20 neighborhoods in the series. The tours are offered once on Fridays and twice daily on Saturdays and Sundays, and launch from the Independence Visitor Center. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>On a recent Friday in July, a commandeered PHLASH bus carted about 30 people around Chestnut Hill and Mount Airy. Each tour is led by a professional tour guide \u2014 someone who gives the \u201cplay by play\u201d \u2014 and a community host \u2014 a resident who can add \u201ccolor commentary\u201d \u2014 Ott Lovell said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Attendees visited the French and English Villages; the country\u2019s oldest country club, Philadelphia Cricket Club; the Wissahickon Inn; and tasted \u201cmidnight chocolate\u201d ice cream from Mount Airy institution Zsa\u2019s Ice Cream, all while learning about the area\u2019s history and how architecture has shaped the community and its landscape. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI really love how Philadelphia 2026 has been about celebrating the city as a whole, not just Old City and downtown, but all of the neighborhoods that give Philadelphia its identity,\u201d said Philip Dawson, community host and executive director of Mount Airy Community Development Corp. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=3517\">\u23f0 Time\u2019s ticking | Sports Daily Newsletter<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Dawson added: \u201cThis tour really helped to highlight Mount Airy\u2019s history, its housing and architecture, its businesses, its people, its diversity. It was really meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Surprisingly, Ott Lovell said, Philadelphians \u2014 not out-of-towners \u2014 have capitalized on the tours. The majority of July 24 attendees were from the Philly area and most had already gone on a \u201cjawnt.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>It was Janice Rudd\u2019s fourth such tour. The 60-year-old recently moved from Houston to South Philadelphia and has been using the series as a way to familiarize herself with her new home city. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m learning so much,\u201d Rudd said. \u201cIt\u2019s such a big city, there\u2019s much to do downtown, in South Philly, out to the [Philadelphia Museum of Art], \u2026 but people just never go beyond there. \u2026 It\u2019s nice to see real neighborhoods.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>While ambitious, \u201cNeighborhood Jawnts\u201d is paying off: Upcoming tours are nearly full or completely sold out with a waiting list to join, according to organizers. Ott Lovell said they\u2019re brainstorming ways to keep low-cost and affordable tours going, past the summer of the Semiquincentennial. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe are a city of neighborhoods and it\u2019s something we should celebrate as much as we celebrate our history,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><i>The \u201cNeighborhood Jawnts\u201d series runs until Oct.<\/i><i> 25. Tours start at 2 p.m. on Fridays and at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
