The World Cup is set to begin later this week, and Philadelphia will host its first match on Sunday. The United States last hosted the men\u2019s FIFA World Cup in 1994, and this year marks the first time that Philadelphia is a host city.<\/p>\n

But why didn\u2019t Philly welcome the World Cup the last time it was here? Well, it was actually up for consideration, thanks to Diane McGraw. <\/p>\n

Before she married Phillies reliever Tug McGraw, Diane led the charge to make Philly and Veterans Stadium a host city for the 1994 World Cup.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Diane, who went from having no interest in sports to living a life full of them, organized celebrity tennis tournaments and national and international sporting events throughout her career. She eventually found herself atop sports and entertainment commissions in four U.S. cities \u2014 Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Louisville, Ky,, and Orlando.<\/p>\n

But her most fulfilling project was one that never came to be. Now, she feels grateful to have played a small part in the largest sporting event in the world coming to Philly.<\/p>\n

\u2018Trying a little too hard\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Sometimes you have to go back to the basics, and for Andrew Painter, that\u2019s as basic as throwing a strike. Eleven starts into his major-league career, Painter has a 6.21 ERA, 108th among 111 pitchers who have worked at least 55 innings this season. It\u2019s not what the Phillies expected from the 23-year-old.<\/p>\n
