{"id":904,"date":"2026-06-12T17:42:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T17:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=904"},"modified":"2026-06-12T17:42:27","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T17:42:27","slug":"montco-sues-to-get-back-7-5-million-paid-for-hurricane-ida-debris-cleanup-after-vendors-razed-parks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=904","title":{"rendered":"Montco sues to get back $7.5 million paid for Hurricane Ida debris cleanup after vendors razed parks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div><audio><\/audio><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Montgomery County sued to get back $7.5 million it paid two disaster debris companies that engaged in \u201coverzealous clearing\u201d that harmed the environment in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida in 2021. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=902\">Acquitted of double murder as a teen, he now faces new charges in a West Philly shooting that left two dead<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Mississippi-based DebrisTech and Texas-based DRC Emergency Services billed Montco for $14 million worth of cleanups, the suit said, but the federal government deemed more than half the removals \u201cunnecessary\u201d and declined to reimburse the county for it.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cTheir overzealous clearing of County lands not only resulted in over half of the County\u2019s reimbursement request getting denied, but it also caused environmental harm that requires extensive remediation,\u201d the complaint said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The lawsuit, which was initially filed in the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas last month but moved to Philadelphia\u2019s federal court this week, is a step to hold two vendors accountable for harm they caused, county spokesperson Megan Alt said in a statement.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p> \u201cThe Montgomery County Commissioners take their responsibility as stewards of the taxpayers\u2019 money and natural resources very seriously,\u201d Alt said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>DRC is committed to providing disaster recovery services that meets the instructions of its clients, Kristy Fuentes, the company\u2019s vice president of administration and compliance, said in a statement. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cDRC looks forward to presenting all relevant evidence during the court proceedings regarding its disaster recovery work in Montgomery County,\u201d Fuentes said. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>DebrisTech did not respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Hurricane Ida hit the Philadelphia area in September 2021, inciting record flood levels, spawning at least seven tornadoes. The vendors were required to engage only in clearings that are eligible for reimbursement by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to the complaint. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Montco relied on the companies\u2019 expertise to determine FEMA eligibility but \u201cinstead of protecting the County\u2019s interests,\u201d the suit said, the vendors \u201covercut trees,\u201d \u201cmismanaged\u201d oversight responsibilities, and \u201cfailed\u201d to comply with FEMA regulations. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>DRC and DebrisTech also cut down at least two Montgomery County-owned nature preserves, according to to the complaint. An 11-acre wooded preserve in Whitemarsh Township is \u201cno longer,\u201d the suit says, and Audubon Park turned into a \u201cmud pit.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>All told, the companies billed Montgomery County $14,028,597.81 for the cleanup, the suit says. FEMA reimbursed just less than half, finding that the vendors removed debris that didn\u2019t pose an \u201cimmediate threat.\u201d <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The federal agency denied multiple appeals by the county, leaving taxpayers on the hook for the remaining $7.5 million.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The suit asks a judge to require the vendors to reimburse the county for the $7.5 million FEMA found ineligible, restore the Whitemarsh site and Audubon Park, and pay damages and attorneys fees. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cService providers hired for their claimed expertise are not free to accept public funds and then fail to perform, divert resources, or withhold services while retaining payment,\u201d the lawsuit says. \u201cTo permit such conduct undermines fiscal accountability, erodes public confidence, and converts taxpayers\u2019 dollars into a risk-free subsidy for contractual non-performance \u2014 an outcome the law cannot tolerate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate-movers-usa.com\/?p=898\">Darnell Nurse is interested in coming to Philly.
