Mantua’s first day of school is now pushed to next week after storms

Students in Mantua Township will have to wait a little longer for their first day of school after storms left thousands without power and roadways blocked this week.

Christine Trampe, superintendent of Mantua Township School District in Gloucester County, announced Wednesday night that Thursday would be a staff in-service day and that the first day for Mantua schools would now be Tuesday.

The district’s first day was supposed to be this past Wednesday before downed trees, power lines, and debris meant families couldn’t make it to school safely.

While storms moved throughout the Philly region during an especially flood-heavy summer, a few municipalities in Gloucester County, including Mantua and West Deptford, were most impacted Tuesday night.

More than 1,200 Atlantic City Electric customers were without power in Mantua Township Wednesday morning. That number was down to about 50 customers by Thursday morning.
